History

The site of the LOFTS has been an integral part of Mt. Washington's urban fabric dating back to 1870 when the original school, the Mt. Washington School, was constructed on the site. After the school was destroyed by fire in 1917, an Art Deco schoolhouse was constructed on the same site in 1931. After Prospect School's closing in 2006, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), the Board of Education - Pittsburgh Public Schools, and the Mt. Washington CDC jointly released an RFP asking developers to submit ideas for transforming this architectural gem into a meaningful new development. The developer, a.m. RODRIGUEZ ASSOCIATES, inc., presented their concept in a public forum in 2010 and was chosen as the developer in 2011. Construction began in May 2013 and the schoolhouse's transformation into the LOFTS of MT WASHINGTON will be completed in the summer of 2014.
